Finish the Race…Someone is Counting on You

Run Your Own Race

“Run your own race.” Those are the words God spoke to me Thursday, November 24, 2016, during a 4 mile Turkey Trot I decided I was running without any preparation. Now doing something without any preparation is definitely not my usual style; however, for some crazy reason this time I made up my mind I was running this thing the entire way NO MATTER WHAT.  To add to the crazy fact that I hadn’t done any training to prepare to run this race, I initially believed the race was a 5K, 3.1 miles, not a 4 miler. So the day before when my sister posted the race and it said 4 Miler Turkey Trot, my first reaction was, “oh heck no, I can’t run that whole thing!” Then in the next breath, I said to myself, “I will do this race and I will finish WITHOUT walking!”

So here I am, in Ohio at 8:30 am in 48 degree temperature, drizzling rain waiting to start the race. “On your mark, get set, GO,” they said, and we’re off.

As I began lots of people, my daughter and niece included, took off, leaving me in their dust. As I was running more people passed me and I started to condemn myself as to how out of shape and lazy I was that I couldn’t beat these people ahead of me. One was pushing a stroller and the other had a dog! Then God spoke those 4 magical words, “Run your own race!”  I then thought how this race was so similar to our lives and the race we are running through life. We start something new and we are all pumped up and take off, but if we don’t pace ourselves we get burnt out and stop. Or worse yet, things don’t go the way we planned, we see others succeeding when we are not, at least in our own too high of expectation minds, and we want to give up and throw in the towel.

“Run your own race,” He says. That means don’t worry how others are running their race, it’s their race, you just keep pushing and putting one foot in front of the other and finish your race.

Rest in Him

I turned a corner and saw the greatest site of the day, the 2 mile marker! I was halfway there! My spirits lifted higher and I was determined I was going to finish and not stop. As I turned the next corner I could see my daughter about 2 blocks ahead and she was walking. My first thought was, “No don’t you walk, you are stronger than that, run!” Then God spoke with a voice so clear, “It’s her race, and sometimes you need to just rest in Me.”

Ouch! That hurt!

But it is so true, especially for me, instead of being so focused on the end, I need to just rest in Him knowing He will sustain me so I can continue putting one foot in front of the other. So many times we get so caught up in the goal we want to attain we don’t appreciate the process and the growth we must have to reach that goal. Our race is not for us, it’s for someone else. I keep hearing the phrase, “Someone’s salvation is depending on your walk.” I have my salvation, thank you, Jesus for that, but there are so many others who don’t have that salvation and freedom in their life that desperately need it. We must be the light in the world showing God’s love to others, so they may also be saved by grace through Jesus Christ.

It Won’t Be Easy, But Through Faith You Will Finish

So here I am, at the last stretch. I’m so close I can almost see the finish line, and then it starts, the wind starts blowing right into my face, making it harder to keep running. Then God brought it to my mind that the wind represented the enemy and all the naysayers in your life saying you can’t do it, or you’re not good enough. So I started talking back to that wind and let it know that I am God’s child and I have the breath of the Holy Spirit at my back pushing harder than anyone could ever push back at me. No matter what anyone tells you, you are worthy of God’s love and provision, and He will never leave you nor forsake you.

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV

We must through our faith in God and who He is keep pushing and believing, taking one step at a time, and we will finish the race!
